September Mandala Challenge

In this month’s mandala challenge, we work our way up the chakra ladder to the heart chakra where our mandalas cool down from the sunny yellow mandalas that we created for last month’s challenge to cooler greens for September.

Warm versus cool green palettes

Greens range from cool to warm depending on how much blue or yellow is used in the green color.

Light pink is another color that shows up in the heart chakra. Here delicate lotus flowers add a soft touch in contrast to the leafy green motif.

Let’s take a look at the relationship of greens and pinks on the color wheel. Pink is a lighter version of the color red. Here we see how green and red are opposite each other; they are complementary colors. In terms of the heart chakra, I think this is a really neat connection as “balance” is a theme for this chakra as illustrated by the six-pointed star in the center made up of two triangles, one pointing upward and one pointing downward. Traditionally, these two triangles represent male versus female energies coming together in harmony. The heart chakra is also a bridge between our physical and material existence and our spiritual natures.

What is striking to me is the use of pink rather than red for the heart chakra. Reds are often associated with passion. For example we give red roses to demonstrate our love. Adding white to red we get pink a softer version that transforms passion into compassion.

One of the biggest lessons that we take away from studying and working with the heart chakra is that it’s central to all healing. It is the bridge between the upper chakras and the lower chakras and its softness and gentleness heal our broken hearts and bring loving-kindness toward ourselves and others.

It’s no wonder that love is central to healing in all faith traditions.
