January Mandala Challenge: Mandala Inspiration Wheel

I’m delighted to announce a new series to inspire your muse called the Monthly Mandala Challenge. Look for a video each month that introduces the theme, contest details, and the prizes. Project Theme for January: Mandala Inspiration Wheel One day while looking at my wall on Facebook, I noticed a really cool video clip of a fidget spinner whirring above a hand-painted mandala with the question, “What gift can you give yourself more of today?” The possible answers delighted my heart – ease, novelty, play, stillness, rest, adventure… I clicked through to my friend Tonia Jenny’s Facebook wall and saw that she had created some other Fidget Spinner Fortunes that posed more heart expanding questions and answers. What can you give yourself more of this week? What will support your dreams today? What is your soul asking for? I’m a DIY kinda gal and thought, I want to make one! But wait, I’d love to see what my mandala family would create. I reached out to Tonia and she generously offered to be the first …

Create a Mandala Shield

Dear Mandala Family, Serendipity has been showing up again and again in many ways for me. A couple of months ago I designed a “virtues shield” that you’ll see further down on this post to go with a magazine article. Then, a couple of weeks ago I was reviewing the different projects for Stage Seven of the Great Round in Susanne Fincher’s book, “The Mandala Workbook” and came across a “mandala shield” project. How cool that what I had created for the magazine article was published in July the same month that we study Stage 7. I seem to be in synch! The mandala shield project is similar to a project that I learned about in my training to become a Virtues Project Facilitator. The prompts from the VP training are more specific than what Susanne offers in her book. Pictured above is the mandala shield that I created this week for myself. I started by drawing a circle, dividing it into four and drawing a circle at the center. In the upper left quadrant, I picked …

Stick ’em Up Mandalas – Mandalas Created with Stickers

This week’s mandala design theme is inspired by the amazing mandala pictured above designed using stickers! Get a closer look at how this intricate mandala was created OVER HERE. Whale Song Mandala As I was planning my own sticker mandalas I thought about collecting ocean themed stickers. Out of the blue and without knowing my desire for such stickers, I received *THIS WATER BOTTLE* in the mail that was fashioned to be a mailing tube. Catherine Calvetti was clearing out her studio and found several things she thought I would enjoy. Among the contents were a lot of stickers in the very theme I was interested in. Wow! Now how cool is that? I love it when synchronicity strikes! Although I didn’t have as many stickers as the mandala I was inspired by, I didn’t let that stop me from creating my own mandalas and in my own style. For the first mandala I started by painting a black circle. I really had fun selecting the various shapes and colored stickers and arranged them in …

Four Artists Play: Mandala Art Inspired by The Mandala Guidebook

I asked several artists who I greatly admire if they would review a copy of my book, “The Mandala Guidebook: How to Draw, Paint, and Color Expressive Mandala Art.” What is so much fun with these reviews is how each artist was inspired to play and create mandalas and they took the concepts and ideas from my book and made it their own. Michelle Ward I first “met” Michelle many years ago when I was first blogging and she was hosting creativity challenges on her blog. Through these challenge, Michelle inspired me to experiment with different mediums and techniques that show up in my mixed media mandalas today. In addition to loving Michelle’s design sensibility, I appreciate her process for finding inspiration everywhere and finding creative ways to translate that in her own style. Michelle writes, “If you have considered jumping into mandala making then I recommend seeking out Kathryn’s book.  It’s a wonderful introduction to the unique art form.” “[Kathryn] has a gentle yet enthusiastic voice that walks you through options for designing, embellishing, and adding color …

Easter Reflection: Moving Stones & Letting Go

[NOTE: Today’s featured post and mandala art is from a blog post that I published back in 2009. It is fun to revisit themes and it seemed so timely with Easter upon us.] My creativity was at an all time high last weekend and by Sunday evening I was tired. I had that feeling of exhaustion and let down one gets after preparing for a party and celebrating. I reminded myself that I was tired and that turning in early was the best thing to do. Before bed I picked up the book, “Seasons of Your Heart” by Macrina Wiederkehr. It was my first time opening the book since a colleague had loaned it to me. Too tired to read it from the beginning, I thought I would randomly open it up to see the message that appeared. I turned to page, 118 where I found a poem titled, “On Letting Easter In.” When dawn stands still with wonder when birds jubilate in the trees when buds hurry into blossoms and grass starts wearing green …
